Finally, some typical Q&A: Can I...? / Nothing

Just started using "Can I....?" questions. Also just started answering "nothing" in a defensive way when asked "What are you doing?"

Prior to "Can I?" she would simply state, "I want...".

Prior to answering "nothing," she would either respond literally what she was doing like, "I playing with this thing" (probably something she shouldn't touch), or just not respond because she was confused by the question, or a response was too hard to formulate, or the intention of the question was ambiguous leaving her feeling perplexed and speechless, etc. Ah, but now we have a quick, defensive, "nothing" to the tune of "Why are you asking me?"
