Social story

The only social story I've seen so far is the one our school OT and speech therapists made for us about The Weekend.

It was a flop.

Through no fault of theirs. Good effort.

The problem with it, that I can see now, is that The Weekend spans too much time for one social story--at least for us. I see this now because I have just read another social story, being circulated regarding the sensory screening of Cars 2, and realized that our The Weekend story lacks details. With the amount of details we would need, it would be more like a Social Saga.

The reason I know we need more details is that since I read the movie theater social story, I now realize that all along AKA has been telling her own social stories, to herself.

When I tell her what our plans are for the next day (and if it's something she is excited about), she quickly begins reciting our entire morning routine: wake-up, vitamin, current favorite breakfast drink, favorite morning shows, "Mommy coffee," "Mommy shower," "get a dress" (get dressed), brush teeth, mouthwash, "birds nest" (brush hair), put on shoes, get in the car, "lip stuff" (chapstick routine), mint (Altoid addiction), "Car song" (the Cars movie Song & Story CD that has to accompany EVERY drive), and then "go to (fill in the blank)!"

What her story is missing is what will happen once we get to (fill in the blank). And maybe,  just maybe, we'd have an easier time out on our adventures in public if she knew what to expect.

It's worth a try. I only foresee three problems: 1. that I'm unable to provide enough detail about what will happen at the destination because I just don't know! 2. that her goldfish-like (and I mean a goldfish cracker) attention span won't tolerate hearing all the details if it's MY voice droning on and on, instead of hers 3. that her language comprehension problems will result in a freak out over semantics.

But still, it's worth a try.
